A few days ago we did a survey on our Instagram account asking our followers which is, in their opinion, the perfect city to paint graffiti. Madrid, Milan, Copenhagen, Rome, Hamburg, Melbourne, Dortmund, Las Vegas and even Murcia were some of the suggestions we got, and each city has its own characteristics that make it special. We have selected the nine most cities that got the most mentions, with an MTN World Wildcard occupying the tenth position. Check out the results of our survey right here:
1-BERLIN
It was clear that the German capital was going to be on the podium in the ranking. The second largest city in Europe has a historic graffiti scene that, although quite hermetic compared to other cities, is responsible for the city showing a social tolerance towards graffiti that we do not see in other western European cities. This means that in addition to walls, in Berlin we can see that the intensive street bombing spreads throughout the city in all possible formats: tags, throw-ups, silver, pieces, heights, roads … All this, together with a A versatile suburban network and an indigenous train circuit such as the S-Bahn, make this metropolis an ideal setting for any writer, whatever their modality.

2-NEW YORK
Just because it is the original cradle of graffiti, New York is the place of pilgrimage for any self-respecting writer. Although its laws against graffiti are more ferocious than in other cities, graffiti is part of the DNA of the Big Apple. So in addition to being the fundamental place to relive the original history of graffiti, we will also find a way to fit our piece into the wall on duty or find our place in the streets with the world’s top bombers. As the icing on the cake, the subway system that spawned this movement, while currently under close scrutiny, remains passable to any intrepid train writer.

3-BARCELONA
It is difficult to talk about our city in an objective way. But the truth is that it is one of the most attractive places for the young tourist, so the leisure offers it presents perfectly match the interests of graffiti writers. A welcoming climate, beach, mountains, many legal walls, an accessible metro system and painted running trains alongside a vibrant nightlife scene make the Catalan capital a must-see for all European and overseas writers. It is also one of the few cities in the world that has a ghetto as its central neighborhood: the Raval, with the facilities to bomb it that this implies.

4-SÃO PAULO
We could say that São Paulo is the Berlin of Latin America. A huge city infested with graffiti, forced to coexist in scrupulous respect with its native cousin, the pixaçao. This respect means that street interventions, whatever their type, have a long duration, accompanied by a social tolerance that is typical of Latin American cities. The size and profile of the city make this a playing field full of all kinds of surfaces and screens, among which the subway and trains are the most difficult.

5-PARIS
If Berlin is the European capital of graffiti, Paris is behind. Proportional to its enormous size, we find in it an extensive graffiti scene that makes the movement more than a tradition, a religion. This is reflected in the orthodox attitude that many of its writers champion: from staunch territoriality to an obsession with discretion and even sectarianism are some of the most normalized attitudes in what is called Panama. Perhaps that is why this city has spawned some of the most important European graffiti writers, such as Bando, O’Clock, Trane, Azyle, Horphe … or groups like GT, SDK, UV-TPK, PAL …

6-VALPARAÍSO
100 km from Santiago we find the city of Valparaíso. Its own name indicates it to us: it is the paradise of Chilean writers. A city full of activity and with great acceptance of artistic interventions in which, of course, graffiti has taken over the streets. In addition, the city has its own railway system in which, from time to time, the most daring writers execute the technique of “leverzo”. Beach, party, alcohol and painting facilities … a magnet for writers from other urban centers.

7-ATHENS
Berlin in miniature but with a Mediterranean climate. It is the first thing that comes to mind if we think of Athens, another of the places where graffiti is present on all the streets of the city. In this specific case, even in the subway since line 1 of the suburban of the Greek capital circulates completely bombed. If the city is already invaded by graffiti, its central neighborhood Exharcheia is even more out of control thanks to the strong local anti-establishment movement.

8-BUENOS AIRES
As in other places in Latin America, graffiti on the street is not officially prohibited and writers are considered as street artists in the eyes of the ordinary citizen. A huge booming scene, with great activity, has a size proportional to that of this cosmopolitan city, one of the largest in the world. In addition, the city of Baires boasts the oldest subway system in Latin America which, despite its difficulty, offers all kinds of subway car models, as well as interurban communication that connects high-contrast areas.

9-MARSEILLE
The Mediterranean coast is home to another gem that becomes part of this classification… it is Marseille. Another destination where the good weather and the beach become the ideal complement to the “graffiti” activity. With a central neighborhood full of life, a subway system of low difficulty and trains with pieces that circulate for days, they are once again the preferred conditions to consider a city as the perfect place to paint graffiti. And in the case of Marseille we also find that endearing aesthetic atmosphere typical of French cities.

10-BASEL
The country of chocolate, knives, watches and black money also has a handful of cities in which the graffiti scene develops in a very interesting way, such as Bern or Geneva. But we have decided to add Basel to this list for its train tracks. A very important part of the European wildstyle has been written on the walls that run along the city’s railway circuit, which may even preserve the pieces of the legendary Dare to this day. It is the most impressive illegal Hall of Fame that we can visit, framed in the idyllic experience of Swiss daily life. It is worth seeing, even once in a lifetime.

1-BERLÍN
Estaba claro que la capital alemana iba a quedar en el podio del ranking. La segunda ciudad más grande de Europa cuenta con una histórica escena de graffiti que, aunque bastante hermética en comparación con otras ciudades, es responsable de que la ciudad muestre una tolerancia social hacia el graffiti como no vemos en otras urbes de Europa occidental. Esto se traduce en que además de muros, en Berlín podemos ver que el intensivo bombardeo callejero se extiende por toda la ciudad en todos los formatos posibles: tags, throw-ups, platas, piezas, alturas, vías… Todo esto, junto con una red suburbana versátil y un circuito de trenes autóctono como es el S-Bahn, convierten a esta metrópolis en un escenario ideal cualquier escritor, sea cual sea su modalidad.

2-NUEVA YORK
Ya solo por tratarse de la cuna original del graffiti, Nueva York es el lugar de peregrinación para cualquier escritor que se precie. Aunque sus leyes contra el graffiti sean más feroces que en otras urbes, el graffiti forma pate del ADN de la gran manzana. Así que, además de tratarse del lugar fundamental para revivir la historia originaria del graffiti, también encontraremos la manera de encajar nuestra pieza en el muro de turno o buscar nuestro lugar en las calles junto a los bombers más top del mundo. Como guinda del pastel, el sistema de metro que engendró este movimiento, aunque sometido actualmente a una vigilancia minuciosa, sigue siendo franqueable para cualquier intrépido escritor de trenes.

3-BARCELONA
Difícil hablar de nuestra ciudad de forma objetiva. Pero lo cierto es que se trata de uno de los lugares más atractivos para el turista de perfil joven, así que las ofertas de ocio que presenta encajan perfectamente con los intereses de los escritores de graffiti. Un clima acogedor, playa, montaña, muchas paredes legales, un sistema de metro accesible y trenes que circulan pintados junto a una vibrante escena de ocio nocturno hacen de la capital catalana un lugar de visita obligada para todos los escritores europeos y de ultramar. Además se trata de una de las pocas ciudades del mundo que ostenta como barrio central un ghetto: el Raval, con las facilidades para bombardearlo que ello implica.

4-SAO PAULO
Podríamos decir que Sao Pulo es el Berlín de latinoamérica. Una enorme ciudad infestada de graffiti, obligado a convivir en escrupuloso respeto con su primo autóctono, el pixaçao. Este respeto se traduce en que las intervenciones callejeras, sean del tipo que sean, tienen una prologada duración, acompañada por una tolerancia social que es propia de las ciudades latinoamericanas. El tamaño y perfil de la ciudad hacen de esta un terreno de juego lleno de todo tipo de superficies y pantallas entre las cuales, el metro y los trenes son las más difíciles.

5-PARÍS
Si Berlín es la capital europea del graffiti, París va detrás. Proporcional a su enorme tamaño, encontramos en ella una dilatada escena de graffiti que hace del movimiento más que una tradición, una religión. Esto se refleja en la actitud ortodoxa que abandera a muchos de sus escritores: desde la territorialidad acérrima hasta una obsesión por la discreción e incluso el sectarismo son algunas de las actitudes más normalizadas en la llamada Panam. Quizá por ello esta ciudad ha engendrado a algunos de los escritores más importantes del graffiti europeo, como Bando, O’Clock, Trane, Azyle, Horphe… o grupos como GT, SDK, UV-TPK, PAL…

6-VALPARAÍSO
A 100 km de Santiago encontramos la ciudad de Valparaíso. Su propio nombre nos lo indica: es el paraíso de los escritores chilenos. Una urbe llena de actividad y con gran aceptación sobre las intervenciones artísticas en la que, como no, el graffiti se ha hecho dueño de las calles. Además, la ciudad cuenta con su propio sistema ferroviario en el que, de vez en cuando, los escritores más osados ejecutan la técnica del “palancazo”. Playa, fiesta, alcohol y facilidades para pintar… un imán para escritores de otros núcleo urbanos.

7-ATENAS
Berlín en miniatura pero con clima mediterráneo. Es lo primero que nos viene a la cabeza si pensamos en Atenas, otro de los lugares en los que el graffiti está presente por todas las calles de la ciudad. En este caso concreto, hasta en el metro ya que la linea 1 del suburbano de la capital griega circula completamente bombardeada. Si las ciudad está ya de por si invadida por el graffiti, su barrio central Exharcheia es aún más descontrolado gracias al fuerte movimiento antisistema local.

8-BUENOS AIRES
Al igual que en otros lugares de latinoamérica el graffiti en la calle no está oficialmente prohibido y los escritores son considerados como artistas callejeros a ojos del ciudadano corriente. Una enorme escena en auge, con una gran actividad, cuenta con un tamaño proporcional al de esta ciudad cosmopolita, una de las más grandes del mundo. Además, la ciudad de Baires ostenta el sistema de metro más antiguo de América Latina que, a pesar de su dificultad, ofrece todo tipo de modelos de vagones de metro, así como una comunicación interurbana que pone en contacto zonas de alto contraste.

9-MARSELLA
La costa mediterránea alberga otra joyita que pasa a formar parte de esta clasificación… se trata de Marsella. Otro destino en el que el buen clima y la playa se convierten en el complemento ideal de la actividad “graffiteril”. Con un barrio céntrico lleno de vida, un sistema de metro de dificultad baja y trenes con piezas que circulan durante días vuelven a ser las condiciones predilectas para considerar una ciudad como lugar perfecto para pintar graffiti. Y en el caso de Marsella encontramos además esa entrañable atmósfera estética propia de las ciudades francesas.

10-BASILEA
El país del chocolate, las navajas, los relojes y el dinero negro cuenta también con un puñado de urbes en las que la escena del graffiti se desarrolla de manera muy interesante, tales como Berna o Ginebra. Pero hemos decidido añadir Basel en esta lista por sus vías de tren. En las paredes que recorren el circuito ferroviario de la ciudad se ha escrito una parte muy importante del wildstyle europeo, que incluso puede que conserve a día de hoy las piezas del legendario Dare. Se trata del Hall of Fame ilegal más impresionante que podamos visitar, enmarcado en la idílica experiencia de la cotidianidad suiza. Merece la pena verlo, aunque sea una vez en la vida.
